Chapter 4 - Resume Tips
There is so much that goes into writing a great resume and I want to give you all the information I can, so in this chapter, I want to give you some resume writing tips that will ensure your resume stands out from the rest.
Use white paper to print your resume on. So many times, people think that if they have brightly colored paper their resume will stand out, but you have to remember that your reader is going to be looking at hundreds of resumes and if the paper makes yours hard to read, it is likely that it will get thrown in the trash.
If you are printing off your resume, make sure that you use a good printer that is not low on ink. If you do not have a good printer, you can use one at your local library to ensure that the resume looks as good as it possibly can. You do not want to hand out resumes that were printed on a low quality printer or that were printed on a printer that was running out of ink because it will only make it harder for the reader to see and that means they will likely pass it over.
List all of the positions you held while working at different companies. For example, if you started working at a company 10 years ago as a laborer and worked your way up to floor manager, you need to list all of the positions you held and what you did in each position. This will allow the potential employer to understand all of the skills you developed while you were in the company.
Do not list your reason for leaving the companies you previously worked at. If the potential employer wants to know, let them ask you during the interview and even then, make sure you put a positive swing on it. Remember when we talked about keeping the resume positive? You do not want to put on your resume that you left your job because your boss was a jerk because it makes you look like you are not able to get along with others. Instead, let them ask you and simply state that you were looking for more opportunities to advance. They don’t need to know every detail.
Do not use the words“I”or“Me”when you are writing your resume. The reader already knows that this is your resume and that it is talking about you. Using these pronouns is just going to make you sound redundant. Instead of saying“I was in charge of new employee safety training”, say“Responsible for the safety training of new employees”. This will come as a bullet point under the job description.
